Where we are
Milan is the commercial centre of Italy, located in a sheltered, central area of
the PO Valley, approx. 30 miles from the
Swiss border, 130 miles from the
French border and less than 90 miles from the Mediterranean sea and main export
port Genoa, where maritime connections to overseas markets have existed since
Roman times. Since the relaxing of all European border controls, this has made
the physical movement of cargo easier and faster.
Milan now sits directly on the main cross-roads between East & West, North and
South, and has regained it’s natural position as central crossing point between
Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
The new airport of Milan – Malpensa was inaugurated in October 1999 and is
targeted to become the major Hub in Southern Europe. For the year 2003 the Milan
airports – Linate and Malpensa – are foreseen to exceed 25 million passengers
and over 2 million tons of freight.
Sea ports: The Italian peninsula is surrounded by the sea and counts several sea
ports. La Spezia was until a few years ago the main container-port in Italy and
in the Mediterranean but Genoa is regaining its leading position and targets to
reach 2.5 million teus in 2003. The port of Gioia Tauro, which started only in
1997 is becoming the busiest container interchange port in the Mediterranean and
is planned to hand over 3 million teus in the year 2003. Sigma Trans
International has own offices located in the main Italian Hub as follow:
- La Spezia Port
- Leghorn Port
- Venice Port and Airport
- Genoa Port
- Civitavecchia Port close to Rome Airport
- Naples Port
